Build thread for my 2005 xlt 4x4: 'The Hulkster'

Nothing too exciting yet but I thought it'd be fun to keep track of my truck's progress here. Suggestions are welcome.

Here are some pics of the truck the way I bought it. First thing I did was new brake pads and an oil change.

Stereo installed. I got everything from crutchfeild. Nothing too exciting but the BT is very nice with a manual. Talking on the phone while driving was impossible before. I originally had an amp and 2 10s installed but I ended up taking them out to save room. I may end up building a new box an re installing them at some point but I would rather have the extra cab space and the extra bass just wasn't worth it.

Pretty basic. I didn't want anything too fancy. Just good sound, BT, Aux and USB. I also like that the display color is customizable so I can match the interior lights for the instrument cluster. I love the stock green color.

I ran the BT mic out the driver's side of the dash, removed the A-pillar and ran it under there, up to the headliner and out by the mirror. I was dreading this part but it actually turned out to be pretty easy to run and the mic sounds nice and clear mounted in this spot.

I installed these all around. They sound great but could use a bit more low-end.

Yeah. I'm pretty happy with it. The only time i have to shade it with my hand is if its super bright outside and the glare reflects off of the plastic on the display. It's is pretty bright so it's usually not an issue. I love the BT functionality. Being able to listen to pandora and use my phone's GPS and take calls without ever having to plug anything in is pretty nice.

I did notice that certain colors are easier to see in the sun than others though

My next mod - Bed rail caps and toolbox

Got a set of Dee Zee diamond plate bed rail caps and a tailgate protector. I got the whole set from Summit. Shipping was a little on the slow side but Summit had the best price I found on these. For some reason I thought they would include the 3m tape but they didn't and that's wherre everything went wrong.

I had some heavy-duty 2 sided weatherstripping tape that I use to glaze windows and I decided to use that for the bed rails. About a month later, they started coming loose and the back sides were popping up. I fount the right kind of 3m tape at Autozone and patched the areas that popped up. The new tape held good so I decided to redo everything with the right tape. It was a huge PITA to clean up the glue from the old tape. This time I used extra tape and spent some extra time tweaking the rail caps until everything fit perfectly. Those fuckers aren't going anywhere this time!

I also found a diamond plate toolbox on CL for 75 bucks, but it was dirty as hell, so I washed it up and polished it with mothers metal polish and a power ball, then I cleaned the bed rail caps and put a couple coats of wax on everything. Here's some pics:

I also got a little chrome ball for the bumper. Mostly just for looks.

Next mod will be an OHC. I got one with all the accessories from RANGAAA for a good price. Haven't had time to install it yet though. I'm also going to try to fix the airbag error code I'm getting (code 27). I read that you can solder in a new LED on the light by the key switch. Hopefully that'll fix it.

Almost forgot the most important mod of all...

I've never cared too much about which brand name I buy for stereo stuff. I try to stay away from obscure off-brands though. I figure as long as it has the features I want and sounds good, that's all that matters. I've never been disappointed with pioneer in the past.

Finally got some time to put the OHC in today. Everything is wired up and working perfectly. The lights on my OHC weren't working though so I had to mod it. I added some licence plate lights to replace the bulbs because the contact ring that goes around the bulbs was all cracked and rotten and the wouldn't light. I took a bunch of pics of how I did the bulb mod so I'll do a how-to at some point.

Got some new wheels in the mail today. Mickey Thompson Classic III. I put one on just to check it out. Now I just need to save up for some tires and throw on a BL.

Got some new goodies at the junkyard today. I found a third brake light with cargo lights and a nicer dome light both from a 2002.
