My truck has been struggling to accelerate when stopped the past couple weeks. Today the check engine light came on. Says its the crankshaft sensor. Looking at the Haynes book, it appears there's quite a bit to remove to get to it. We are in the middle of moving houses. Any ideas on what I should expect to pay for a mechanic to switch it out for me? I'm not the greatest with cars or I would try it myself if I had the time. Thanks!

I think on a 97 the sensor is behind the crankshaft pulled. Not a hard job. Remove your fan and shroud. Place a socket on the crankshaft pulled and connect a breaker bar to it, place breaker bar on frame and crank engine to loosen bolt.

Rent a pulley puller from your local autoparts store to remove the pulley, you maybe able to remove the pulley using a rubber mallet but it may be seized on. After you remove the pulley you should see the sensor pointing to the toothed gear behind the pulled. Probably only 2 8mm bolts.


Edit I'm way off. You can access the sensor after removing the alternator and water pump inlet tube from the passenger side.

Any idea is my sensor is a 2 or 3 pin?

Also, mechanic said it would be $300 in labor to change it. This too high?
