5.0 Swap MD50R2 and BW4406
2 Attachment(s)
Over the last month or so i've been planning on doing a 5.0 swap into my 2000 extended cab 4X4 4.0 ford ranger. When i started out i was going to try and find an engine from at least a 98 explorer so i could keep PATS in my vehicle and not have to have new keys made. But after searching all of the junk yards in the area i came home with an engine out of a 97 Mountaineer. This has its ups and downs:
Pro's: No PATS system Con's: Fuel system requires running a return fuel line here's a list with prices of everything i have so far: Engine- complete including alternator, power steering pump, high pressure power steering hose, a/c pump and lines, throttle cable, cruise control cable, starter, batter cable harness, evap control and hose, fan shroud and ecu paid $493 to picknpull which included core charges. Came out of a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer Attachment 36120 :thrasher: Attachment 36121 :D Transmission- MD50R2 out of a 1997 F-150 4.2L V6 4X4 $400 from salvage yard Transfer case- BW 4406 with electric shift out of a 1997 f-150 $200 same salvage yard as tranny- 107k miles on them Flywheel- 164 tooth with 50 oz of imbalance from autozone $53 listed as flywheel for 1995 f-150 with the 5.0 p/n FW9710 SCT tuner from moreperformancetuning.com that came with 3 free custom tunes- to delete the automatic transmission out of the ecu $380 11 inch clutch kit from summit racing $120 Manual transmission starter from ebay -$35 Front drive shaft from 97 f-150 from salvage yard -$75 Ujoint adapter from autozone for front drive shaft -$8 Rear drive shaft from 96 f-350 measured 51" from salvage yard -$100 Ujoint adapter from NAPA for rear drive shaft to fit 8.8 rear axle -$26 P/N 448 Gaskets from Autozone- intake manifolds, oil pan, $30 Spark Plug wires from summit racing Exhaust peices from summit header back- 2.5" pipes, magnaflow muffler, high flow cat, $200 going to be side exit single in front of the rear tire So Total is a little over $2k- turned out to be more than i wanted it to be but in the end i have the manual transmission still and 4wd on the fly since the shift motor from the ranger bolts right onto the 4406, plug and play basically. So i'm planning on doing the swap next weekend -the 16th of Feb, as i am still waiting on a few essential parts to get delivered. Going to document it all how it fits, things i had to change- like the wiring- going to take pictures of what exactly i changed about the alternator and a/c compressor and anything else that needs to be changed. |

Scribbed. Why didnt you go with a manual transfercase?
|
Fitment of the shifter linkage in the tunnel, cutting a hole in my floorboard. I've had good luck with the electronic.

Re: 5.0 Swap MD50R2 and BW4406
Update: bunch more parts came in yesterday and today: flywheel, gasket set, water pump. now i need to get the proper bolts to hold the pressure plate onto the flywheel. They are the same size and pitch thread as the exhaust manifold bolts but they require a short section without threads near the heads to align the pressure plate onto the flywheel because there aren't any alignment studs on these flywheels. Also did a little homework on the wiring changes that need to be made. Will post pictures later tonight when i get home from work. :-)

Well waiting on a few exhaust peices but other than those bolts i've pretty much got everything. Fingers crossed to get it all started saturday morning. Gonna hit up home depot in the morning for the bolts and some hose clamps.

Rest of the exhaust came, waiting on that starter. Should be here later today or tomorrow! |
