modelageek 02-07-2010 02:54 PM

+1 on the mercon. some peeps want to put gear oil in it but that will fubar it

TransAmFSAS 02-07-2010 06:59 PM

so can it either be dex III OR mercon.

or does it have to be a fluid that is a dex/mercon compatible in one.

STL 02-07-2010 07:00 PM

I added synthetic gear oil to mine, will that screw it up? Has anyone had problems with synthetic gear oil instead of ATF?

Yes...it will burn up the bearings...use ATF only

My father got the gear oil from his work, he said it shouldn't be a problem. Why is a thicker syn oil worse in the manual transmission then ATF? What difference does it make?

----------

I have ATF that replaces MERCON, would it be ok to use the substitute? And my rear diff is not a Limited slip, could I use the gear oil there?

Because the M5OD has tight tolerances and gear oil can't do the job right

Ok, can I save the gear oil for my rear diff? It's 75w90 I think.

It is a conspiracy by Ford to make more money. Gear oil is cheaper then Mercon. They want to sell more Mercon The "con" in Mer-con is a hidden symbolic meaning for the con-spiracy!
