2003 4.0 v-6

So I have an '03 4.0 V-6 with stock everything except the muffler back. I have a FLOWMASTER 40 on it but how do I get more sound out of it? Can I remove 1 of the 2 CATS on it?

cwc ranger 02-01-2010 08:30 PM

you could but then you would run into O2 sensors going nuts cause they are on the cats, i put a cold air intake in my 4.0 and my friends ask what i have fore exhaust but i got a flomaster 40 and thats it after the cat and its pretty loud

FireFighter27 02-01-2010 08:45 PM

so your saying that if i put in a cold air intake into the truck it will give it better performance?

i want to put a KandN cold air intake in my 3.0 eventually. this may sound weird but i read somewhere (dont remember where) that 3.0's already have a cold air intake in them? does anyone know if this is true? and can i really expect a respectable amount of performance gain of of it/is it worth the money.

oh and im getting a flowmaster next week. i was planning on the 40 but might go with the super 44 cause its a little louder.

ok 3.0s already have CAI stock no need for a K&N intake you wont see anything from it just sound. they arent worth the money and time it takes than what it will give you. even if you spent hundreds of dollars on exhaust and CAI intake you might only see a 1hp difference and prolly nothin on the mpg side of it. i mean if you want to spend 300 bucks on a CAI you could just send me that money and i will promise you 15hp gains and 5mpg better gas mileage

well yeah. like i said i remember reading that before and wasnt positive. im getting a flowmaster for the sound not the gains. what would you do with 300$ to get that kind of gain out of it?

new roller rockers about 1.7:1 rockers and that will give you about a 10 to 15hp increase not sure bout the mpg part but that will give you more power and help the motor rev faster and get up to speed quicker. and also a cam for about 270 bucks and that will also help

I removed one of the 2 cats under my truck with a straight through 2.5in tube and welded in an O2 bung for the sensor. That opened up my throttle response, a few mpg's and some sound for all around $30 for the bent tube to take the CAT's place.

I'm also running a SI/SI flow40 2.5" turned down at the muff. When I put the Super44 SI/DO 2.5" on I'll let people know the differences between the muffs.

FireFighter27 02-02-2010 07:53 PM

what year is your truck tre? looks like an 03 but not to sure. amd which cat did you remove, the closest to the headers or closest to the muffler?

TrePaul86 02-02-2010 08:33 PM

Here's my pics:

I cut off the last cat in the system, the one closest to the muffler and welded in a straight 2.5" pipe with an "S" bend in it... Also drilled out a hole for the o2 and welded on a bung for the o2...

My truck is an 01... But only parts of it are still 01 lol

FireFighter27 02-02-2010 09:27 PM

haha lol whats a bung how does that affect the o2 sensor? does removing the last CAT still allow you to pass emissions?

bigcountry 02-02-2010 09:42 PM

the BUNG is where the 02 sensor goes into the pipe before and after the cat and correct me if im wrong but the last cat the real one you have 2 one is a precat and the other is the auctual one

FireFighter27 02-02-2010 09:44 PM

does removing that last cat increase sound and allow for a pass on emissions?

bigcountry 02-02-2010 09:48 PM

not sure about the emissions part but it wiould sound different and it would increase sound because you would be opening up the system

FireFighter27 02-02-2010 09:58 PM

so remove the second cat, put a filler pipe on and bung it?
