Cam Shaft Syncronizer???

Ok so i have had my ford ranger for 5 years its an 04 xlt automatic and it has recently starting making this whistling sound and i cant tell where its coming from in the engine but its coming from under the hood. The Mechanic i took it to says its the Cam Shaft Syncronizer and its gonna cost 450.00 to fix.... but my girlfriends dad asked an old mechanic friend of his and he says that my 04 ranger doesnt have that.... so if someone could lemme know if they do or not im going outta my mind lol

It has a cam shaft position sensor but does not have the cam synco. It also has a knock sensor but I am not sure what it is.

The 2004 3.0 OHV does have the Cam Position Sensor and the Synchronizer drive. The Cam Position Sensors of the 2.3 DOHC and 4.0 SOHC read directly from an overhead cam and have no need for a Synchronizer.
