Ford crate motor

What is the best V8 crate motor for 1998 4X4 5MT?

Re: Ford crate motor

are you looking for a turn key built engine, a long block assembly or something you can swap from a junk yard? what is your budget, intention and transmission?

Re: Ford crate motor

I was looking for a new Ford factory built crate motor that would be an easy swap for the 3.0

Re: Ford crate motor

Give me a break. For me the easiest fit is the best motor for a simple upgrade for this truck. IMHO a pickup is a pretty poor choice for a high performance 427ci motor.

My modified BMW 335is coupe takes care of any performance requirements I might have.

I would go with a 5.0 it is the most common v8 swap

Re: Ford crate motor

Your vague question has a lot of room for interpretation. Pretty obvious by the lack of responses here.

Are you looking for a DD, street strip racer or 4x4 monster?

1 Attachment(s)
Just a DD level with the ability to keep my 5MT & 4X4 system stock. Will also pull a small jet ski trailer on occasion.

Over the years almost all my high horsepower DD & strip cars have been GM (Chevy/Pontiac) powered including some old Fords. Have no real experience with modified Ford products outside a Mustang 351 Windsor AT to 351 Cleveland 4MT for my nephew back in the late 1980's.

When the time comes I am hoping to swap a rebuilt 4.0 from proformance. I think you'll have to order through a third party because they are a wholesale business. Get a donor 4.0 vehicle like an explorer or other ranger and swap the parts using this assembly: http://www.goppt.com/ppt-web/docs/fe...d-4.0-SOHC.pdf

that's my plan anyway.

Get a donor 5.0L explorer and swap all of the parts over its pretty well documented on about a million different sites. I would recommend using the search function on a couple of ranger sites. There is no easy swap from the shit vulcan 3.0L V6 to a V8 you will have to get a new transmission, but the tcase will swap.

Start there.

Re: Ford crate motor

You need to decide on carbed or EFI, If you want EFI the expo front dress and wiring will make the job much easier. Any 302 will accept those parts so IF you want to drop cash on the crate motor do it. The cheapest crate is 4k and I dont think you can use the valve covers or oil pan and it still needs all accessories. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...KeyField=11752

Your trans has an integral bellhousing and will not bolt on to a 302, or any other engine for that matter. You can run an f150 manual trans but in order to run the ranger case you will need a 500 dollar adapter. http://www.advanceadapters.com/categ...0/0/0/3/0/0/0/ You may also need custom shafts in this combo but I am not 100% sure.

You could run an f150 tcase but it is a real tight fit in the ranger frame. Thats as close to stock as you can get.

Re: Ford crate motor

You need custom length shafts either way the motor trans combo is longer.
