Replace bed bolts?
Anyone replace the bed bolts? and what did you use? These torx heads are just a huge pain in the butt, I am considering using regular bolts.......

Re: Replace bed bolts?
You can use regular bolts. Just remove a current bolt and take it to a hardware store.
I dont see why they would be a pain in the butt. Why are you removing them so often to be a pain in the butt? |
Re: Replace bed bolts?
I replaced my fuel pump a few months ago, and kept getting a random check engine light, my uncle said it is probably the o ring on the tank top, so I had to take it off again to fix that, and I am doing exhaust and such now as well.
The bolts came out really bad the first time, a few have mangled threads, we cleaned them up before putting them back in, and this time they were harder to get them out than the first time. I plan to take off my bed in the near summer and deal with the rust and then undercoat it. I just want it to be easier to take off next time as I dont want to have to torch the bolts out....... |
Re: Replace bed bolts?
Just remove one and take it to a hardware store. Make sure it is a grade 8 bolt and you'll be fine.

Re: Replace bed bolts?
You can't just remove one, in my 99 the bolts aren't all the same length.
The front two are longer than the 4 rear ones. And good luck trying to find matches at your local hardware store, metric + extra long = hard to find. You may end up having to special order them. I didn't have to worry about it, new longer ones came with my body lift lol. Maybe go ahead and go that route, kill 2 birds with one stone. Lol --- I know it's wise to use blue or red loctite on the bolts, but if you're taking them in and out that much, I would put anti-seize or never-seize on them. That will keep them from rusting up and being a pain to remove. |
Re: Replace bed bolts?
Ah ya forgot the 2 front bed bolts are about 1.5" longer then the others. As stated above would be wise to add some thread locker to them when replaced and you know your not gonna remove them again for a long time. Anti seize would be a good idea as well.

Re: Replace bed bolts?
It seems weird that you are having issues. Maybe just get new factory bed bolts and put never seize on them?
