Manual tranny durability

wondering how tough the 5 speed manual is in my 02 edge with the 4.0. i find myself taking it kinda easy on it most of the time, but every now and then i have to snatch a gear or two, just wondeing it i am going to end of with pieces beside me one day!

Edge4.0 12-29-2009 05:56 PM

so i guess no one has had any problems then?

js250 12-29-2009 07:03 PM

guess not. i have a problem of not shifting all the way and it grinds. fr 2 to 3

jjanak79 12-29-2009 08:01 PM

I have the 4.0 i change the tranny oil in my tranny once a year. shifts perfect. my buddy has about 220k on his tranny (1994 ranger 4.0). shifts perfect but grinds a lil in 4th. :D

Original trans took a shit at about 70k. 2nd gear stopped working. Found out it was a broken gear for 2nd that the syncro rides on.

2nd trans took a dump at about 115k. Output shaft cracked in half. Tcase housing split in two as well.

3rd one is running fine.

these trans and clutch components are not that beefy at all....it's really quite weak. These mazda m5od trans are known to be weak and and typically all have a 3rd gear shift problem(slight grinding). BUT...you'll have a dead slave cyl before you'll have any pieces in the trans.

they can handle a lot of power with a better clutch

Edge4.0 12-30-2009 04:19 PM

well that mean i will be snatching gears in something else then, lol. are you pretty hard one yours 4x4wannabe01? mine does grind just a little every now and then going into third, but not very often.

5 speed

im on my second trans its backing a measly 3.0 and im eating 2nd gears. they like to pop out when under racing conditions, hence to goin with a c4. im not going with another manual if i can help it. not pushing big tires, or lots of power. running 33's and 4.56 gears. but when i get up from 1st and pop second, every once in awhile itll pop out of second under hard acceleration, or if the tires are roosting sand. it gets more frequent then you just cant keep it in second anymore..... dunno if this helps but hey, just my 2 cents. BTW, its a 94 trans. a 91 engine, and 91 ranger components.

I've got a spec stage II disc and I feel that sorta aided in the last failure that also took out the tcase with it. It grabs like a mother effer. Locker, sticky 35's, traction bars, brand new engine putting out alot more power than before, me abusing the truck a little on the pavement first time after new engine kinks were worked out...shit breaks. sucks.

I'm only hard on it at times when I sorta gotta be on the trail. When I'm not hard on it, the pain in the ass parts break(slave/master). lol.

While it may cost more to fix an auto, it seems like the manual guys are fixing theirs more often.

Fx4wannabe01 12-30-2009 06:09 PM

^^Might not be the case. It isn't the manual transmission itself that goes. It's the clutch components(master/slave) that go out more often than the trans. It's unfortunately that somebody like myself or Christian are vocal on our POS trucks, but hey, we're showing how bad they can be. lol. You don't see many threads about people breaking their transmissions.....it's always clutch problems. That being said, when my trans went, they were being worked hard and being abused. It's what happens and it's too damn bad there isn't any upgrade manual trans for these trucks other than a T5 which nobody makes the adaptor for a tcase. SOL.

Jay FX4 12-30-2009 06:39 PM

True. I guess it's not so much the gear box itself.

Edge4.0 12-30-2009 07:10 PM

damn that sucks. the clutch feels really good in mine so maybe it will hold out for a while

my '88 2wd went over 200K with noting more than a fluid change at 145,000. the '93 i have now lost 2nd gear ay only 80K. put in a rebuilt trans and am now at 128,000. i pull a trailer reguarly and havent had any issues since the time i lost 2nd. i think it may have been low on fluid before i got it. i know ive kept a good eye on fluid level with the rebuilt trans. i run penzoil syncromesh fluid in the trans.
