Starter/Solenoid question

I have an intermittent starter issue with my 99 Ranger. From time to time I will get a click and no start. I've installed a new battery and now am looking at replacing the starter. I think it's the solenoid but since it's part of the starter I'm going to replace both. My question is, will a '97 2.5 fit the '99 2.5?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't know about the starter swap......but i would get a multimeter for $10...next time it clicks test for power at the solenoid.........if you have a 5 speed the clutch positioning switch could be acting up

it's easy with a MM to test......next time it clicks test the power at the small wire on the solenoid.......someone needs to be turning the key to start.....if you get 12 volts then most likely it is the starter or solenoid.....if you get less than 12 volts it is , the NSS, ignition switch or one of those components.....if you play with the transmission shifter will it start?.how about if you fiddle with the key and the steering column will it start?.....you also can test the main cable at the starter that should always have 12.5 volts...
