86 ranger will not go

86 Ranger, 4x4, 2.9L, manual trans. While driving one day heard a loud pop and truck stopped moving. Will go into any gear just fine as well as shifting into 4x4, truck just sits there like it's in Neutral. Someone said it may have been the transfer case belt or chain??? Not sure about that one. Can anybody help me narrow this down? Thank You.

well yours should have a chain inside, might have snapped.

Hello,

Have you(or someone else) looked under it while its in gear to see if the driveshaft is spinning? THat would be my first step, narrows it down to the tranny or rear end. From my understanding of chain drive transfer cases(which isn't much), the chain only runs the front end so even if the chain broke you would still have 2wd. (I could be wrong).

Driveshaft is not spinning.

yeah never thought of that, clutch still working? Maybe the whole inside transfer case scrambled itself.

im just guessing here, but if the input shaft on the tranny snaped......you couldnt go anywhere at all.
or maybe the bolts backed out on the pressure plate.
but you would hear alot of clanking (bolts rattling around) while engine is running.
my money is on that tranny input shaft!
(the shaft the clutch pack splines onto) or a internal tranny shaft!
