How to: Throttle Cable mod

This seems to be pretty common knowlage, but if anybody doesn't know, here it is:

Over time, the throttle cable stretches and the housing seats more into its ferruls, thus, adding play to the gas pedal. You never feel this because a) it happens so slowly and the gas pedal drops down more so theres no "free" period (where you push on the pedal and nothing happens) while youre pressing on the gas. This is an easy fix, and its free. All you need is a few zip-ties and 10 minutes.

Crawl under your dash and find the throttle cable. There's two of them under there, one is the right one, the other one I have no idea what it does, but dont zip tie it. What you want to do is pull the gas pedal off the floor and wrap as many zip ties as you can fit around the excess throttle cable sticking out. I fit three around mine and the difference is huge. Once you've done this, your truck can fully achieve a wide opened throttle. My friend Tom did this and claims his truck down shifts smother now. Whether of not it helps shifting is up to you. I dont know. But you will get better response at the pedal.

I know this works on Rangers and Explorers, I'm not sure what else.

Why not just view the TPS voltage live from the obd2 stream and see if you are getting true WOT?

ive done this mod about 2 months back nothing but good from it

so you put the zip tie where he has the "black tie wrap" arrow pointing.

I have 2 around mine for almost 2 years now and no problems. Just remember not to put too many on. If you do it can put stress on the cable and cause it to snap.

Yep. You put zip ties in between the spring and end of the throttle cable. One or two should be all that you need.

All your doing is taking the slack out of the cable. Over period of time it gets stretched

So the end being the part the other arrow is pointing at? I put zip-ties between where the "red" arrow is pointing, but it seemed more logical to put them where the end of the cable is hanging out? Is that where I should of put it?

Re: How to: Throttle Cable mod

I just did the mod, i was skeptical about it at first, but once i drive my truck, i realized it made my truck easier to drive, so then i did a 0-60 run with it, and my truck did a nice peel-out, which it used to only be able to do that on dirt or snow, so yes this mod works and really makes a huge difference, I give it an a+++ and very strongly recommend this :D

That was kinda rough....I have a huge head. Lol.

I got one on there, so I guess mine was not too bad, big difference though.

I took this mod one step further and just replaced the cable. I didnt like the idea of putting zip ties on it. I got one new from my local Ford Dealer for $33.19. There is an updated part that is a little different from the old one. Took 5 minutes to change. Part number below for the throttle cable for a 2001 4.0.

PN # 2L5Z9A758CA cable assy.
