Question about the 5r55e

Hey Guys,

My girl's grandpa has an exploder with the 4.0 mated to a 5r55e that he has some major issues with.

He claims that with the 16 plug plugged in, it wont shift into reverse or drive, but if he unplugs it, it will shift into reverse.

He still has 1 & 2 whether its plugged in or not..

The tranny has been replaced, with a rebuilt tranny(twice). The first one he got they thought there was something wrong with it cause it does this(as the original trans did when he bought it) and so the company he got it from brought a new one over and it still does this..

You guys have any ideas?

Do you mean that the shifter lever is locked in park and you can't put the truck in reverse or drive?

If so, he needs to either adjust the big black thing on the side of the transmission, or check his brake pedal position switch on the brake pedal stalk.

No, I mean that the tranny will not actually engage into gear..

Is he absolutely sure the new transmissions were 5R55E's? If they're 4R44E's, then the computer may not recognize the transmission due to lack of certain input from some of the sensors.

Hmm I'll check with him just to make sure, but I'm pretty sure its right. He's a mechanic with an inspection station(not saying much I guess, but still) so I would hope he knew not to switch..

The only physical difference on the outside is the lack of connectors on certain years.

You really can't tell unless you see the truck the transmission was originally in and read the code on the door sticker, possibly decoding case id numbers, or tearing into the transmission and identifying parts that way.
