2000 Ranger, runs rough

This is my first post, but here it goes, Ive searched and searched.

Got a 2000 Ford Ranger with the 3.0. I put a tank of good gas in it (non ethanol) All of a sudden its hard starting, rough idling, backfiring under acceleration... has new plugs and wires. It is not throwing any codes, could it be the famous cam sync and sensor not sure about the "death chirp" Ive thought ive heard it but not sure.. it has 180k. Planning on a full scale cleaning of everything I can. Kind of sounds like im running on 5 cylinders or a diesel.

Questions

Could it be cam sync and sensor ?

Could it be Fuel filter related ? (to me highly unlikely)

What else could it be ? I'm thinking sensor related

Thanks for your time.

check and make sure your wires are in the correct firing order,, sounds like a crossed wire which would cause all of your symptoms

That little box with the numbers on it, is that the order of the coil pack? Just curious...Gonna make sure I hook mine up correctly too as I noticed an idling issue with mine after doing new plug wires.

yes it is the coil pack, configured mine to this and it runs perfectly

its wired correctly, Im going to get new plugs and wires, the shop supposedly changed the plugs but didnt change the wires, looked like they just cleaned the outside of the wires. I can pull 1,2, and 6 off of the coil (not at same time) and there is no change in how it runs. All this started when we had a thunderstorm I went through some water, not enough to hit the air filter. It drove fine then next morning the hard starting and rough running started. I can unhook the MAF and the next one up the intake with no change either. Is there a fuse or fusible link for any of the electronics.

This is my first Ford, Im a little lost,

Maybe your coil pack is bad?

its getting spark to those cylinders.. might try to find one to check it out.

maybe hook up an obd-II scanner to see if there is any stored codes, the engine light bulb could be burnt out. or the previous owner removed it. it's always a possibility, i did have similar issues when my wires were bad.

EDIT: while you're at it pick up a 3 or 4 dollar bottle of fuel injector cleaner. then throw that in when you have a 1/4 of a tank.

Re: 2000 Ranger, runs rough

Ok had to figure out why the OBD port wasnt geting power, stupid fuse, It had codes... lots and lots of codes

P1400 EGR Low power
P0302 Misfire
P0306 Misfire
P0113 Pending IAT sensor
P0301 Pending Misfire
P0305 Pending Misfire

The misfires i was causing as well as the IAT.. So I cleared them and here is what I got.

P1400 everytime
P0353 just once...

So by this is it the EGR or is it a problem with the circuit going to it ?

----------

or is it the DPFE sensor???
