Do I have no overdrive?

Hey there I just bought my ranger a couple days ago down in Florida. I drove it up to Norfolk,Va where I live now and on the high way I noticed its not geared right. Its a 2006 3.0 with a 5 speed. When I'm going 65mph i'm already at 2500 rpm. I didnt want to take it over 2500 rpm i figured it would be hard on the engine to going 3k for 700 miles. My question is what the heck? Did ford just save a buck by not giving me an overdrive?

If it wasn't designed to be driven over 2500rpm, it wouldn't go any higher than that. 5th gear is OD. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

So your saying not to go over 65 mph? I'm no speed demon but i like to be able to at least go the speed limit.

At 70 mph I'm tacking about 2600 rpms...your truck is fine. I have the 4.0l 4X4 5 speed auto. Do about 60-63 and you'll get good gas mileage.

No I said the exact opposite of that. What you're describing is perfectly normal operation. You can go as fast as you want.

My ole girl trucks around at 80mph at 3k no prob.....I was riding at 70mph in 4th gear for some extra power and it was still around 3k.

You'll be fine. Hell, my Mazda6 sits at about 3k at 75mph.

Not to high jack the thread.....but anyone know why my truck has the O/D spot on my dash, but no way to engage, disengage O/D? Why even put it there if driver has no control over it?

the OD on/off button is on the end of the shifter lever if you have an auto trans.

if you have a 5-speed 5th gear is your overdrive...... ford uses the same dash panel for several different years of rangers and some exploders.....

Re: Do I have no overdrive?

You disengage your OD by shifting from 5 to 4.........

It won't light up with a 5 speed manual.....It's a manual transmission, you should know what gear your in without having a dummy light in the dash.
