Is the radio now part of the computer?

New 2011 Ranger...Radio is AM/FM/Satellite.

My wife has a Chevy HHR...the radio works fine, but the number(s) display is acting up. Then it vanishes. Next day, the display comes back and all is well for some time...then the same thing happens. There is no replacement bulb or module. Chevy tells me they have a "radio exchange", take out your old, get a rebuilt unit installed...then everything gets re-programmed. ($125-$150) It seems the RADIO tells the computer things like "the key is in the ignition"...any alarms....the turn signals are being used.....an integral part of the computer electronics. An aftermarket radio? 500-600 bucks with all the "re-programming". So...one is stuck with a factory radio of some kind.

My RANGER....the same thing? Hope not. I like so much to CHOOSE.

No. And the Chevy isn't either.

chevy has been doing that for years where some of the controls are in the radio, but ford hasn't done that
