97 Ford Ranger Timing Issue?

I have a 97 ford ranger 2.3 4 banger. Recently my timing belt broke when going 35 mph down the road. Luckily it is non-interference engine so it is still good. I had my mechanic replace it and he said it was good to go. I picked it up from the shop and it sputtered off the start, than once I got to 3-5 mph it was fine. I went back and he said he would take a look, he put cam cleaner and gas cleanser thinking it was that. He is convinced the timing is spot on ( me not so much). It only seems to do it when the engine is cold or I sit at stop lights for long periods of time. He told me to take it and drive it for a day or two to see if it corrected itself. It has not. I called him and now he suppossebly cant get me in for a week, Do you think the timing is off or another issue? Also is it bad to continue to drive it? He says it will be fine.

Please help
