Hey guys hows it going? My name is Justin and I live in Houston. I just
found this forum but I have had 5 rangers in my life. I picked up a 96 ext cab 4.0 with 78k original miles from an older man. Its a great truck so far I just have to figure out some stuff with the transmission. It seems to shift and down shift hard from 1st to 2nd. Looking forward to learning more about rangers

First thing with your transmission problem, since you already asked, check the fluid level, also, check the records from previous owner and see if he has ever changed the fluid and filter. If not, go to a reputable place and have the transmission flushed, and the filter changed. I also bought my truck from an older Gentleman, Norm Howard, my grandfather passed away in 08 and left me the truck, I wouldn't take it from Grandma, so I purchased it. With 30k on the odometer. I know have a little over 105k on the truck and still running like a champ. The transmissions are not completely bulletproof in these trucks, whether you have the manual or auto, I'm assuming you have the auto from your post.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt 20k miles ago cause some how it got water in it. The trans fluid was changed a year and a half ago so I think I might try changing that and the filter. The fluid level is perfect and really red. Here is a picture of my truck
