need serious help

Regarding 93 Ranger 4x4

Driving along a highway when all of a sudden, it felt like I hit something. There was a loud clunk. I looked under the truck and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The sound came from the front end, possibly the transfer case? I locked in the hubs, pushed the 4 high button, and I had no light indicating 4 high was locked in. It made a little bit of a sound but didn't engage. I continued to drive and it happened about 8 more times in a matter of 10 miles. The noise occured when the truck was in motion, not when starting and stopping (shifting). It didn't happen while in any specific gear. I checked the fuse under the hood, but not the fuse under the dash. Has anyone else ever experienced this?
