Thinking of Buying a 2001 Edge / Pros & Cons
 
Hello Everyone,
I am completely new to this site and completely new to Ford Ranger trucks. My 17 year old sone is in love with the Edge and wants to buy one. The one we are going to look at tonight is a 2001 with 87,000 miles, V6, 5spd, regular cab which appears to be very clean in photos and by what the seller has told me.

As a used truck, what should I be looking for when giving the truck the once over. Any issues that I should be aware of that you good folks know? Any pros & cons to the 2001 model??

Any suggestions for this first time truck buyer would be great!!!

I believe that 2001 was the first year for the available 4.0 Liter SOHC engine which had 50 more horsepower. If you can find a 4.0, buy it! More power and the same mpg as the 3.0.

edge pros:
4x4 height even if it is 4x2
torsion bar suspension
best looking ranger out there (besides the level II)
4.10 geariing (PRO for manyyyy of us but if its a street truck only then its not really a pro lol but doesnt really hurt)

there are soem features that came with the edge that are awesome but not really something to look for if he doesnt care

Not really. Ford was partially wrong about this. There seems to be a 1/4 inch difference between the 4x2 and 4x4 rear lift blocks. Also, 4x2 almost always came with 15" wheels, while 4x4 trucks almost always came with 16" wheels. That's at least an 1 1/2" of difference. Every inch counts.

As for things to look out for, the 2001-2002 SOHC 4.0's faced timing chain tensioner issues that will eventually need to be addressed.

If the truck has the 3.0, there are Camshaft Synchronizer issues that will need to be addressed.

Those two are the most major issues.

Yes the edge basically just a more luxurous kinda ranger it has one or two minor mods maybe higher suspension and fender flares

The 4.0 man trust me that is one hell of an engine I just got my ranger in January it comes with a 4.0 and Whoa thats some major power man trust me your sons gona love it. I fell in love with my 4.0 in as soon as I dropped the pedal the front end raises up and its all haul ass from there haha.

The only problem is that you get crappy gas mileage in th city maybe 16-18 mpg highway is good though I usually get around 22-24 mpg

i have yet to see an edge that didnt come stock w 4.10s im not saying ur wrong just sayingh i havnt seen it

an edge is not really a "luxurious" model. its an entry level model with some fancier (mainly appearance) add ons, originally designed with the intent to appeal to a younger market. i.e. body colored bumpers & flares, different wheels in some cases. its slated between the base xl and higher-end xlt in trim level.

fordzilla covered the engine issues, but otherwise, its a bulletproof, time proven design.
the 4.0 will say 4.0 SOHC pretty big right on top of the engine, so its pretty easy to tell which engine you're dealing with.

Pat's truck (01DangerRanger) supposedly has 3.73's, although I can't confirm it.

The fact that the Edge trim name was brought out to appeal to the younger market is spot on. My previous Ranger was a 2000 Sport, and that truck was nowhere near as cool as my Edge. When I wrecked the '00, and started looking for other Rangers, I came across the Edge trim level, and knew exactly what I wanted to replace my '00 with.

x2 i fell in love w the edge and they kept trying to sell me a silver xlt similar to morgans and i just woudlnt do it . love the EDGE!!!! :)

im not a fan of the solid colors. i like my XL, it was a bland lil 2wd work truck. now its custom to me, lifted, bigger tires. and even though its 2wd, its still a wheelin machine. edge trucks have torsion bars, which means no lowering. uhm what else.. anyway, it all depends on what you want in your ranger.

what will your son be doing with his truck? street only? lowering it? taking it offroad?
cuz I can tell you right now, my edge (with a spindle lift and 33" tires) is a beast offroad. Might not be the smoothest truck I have been in, but I can tell you right now, this thing WILL NOT break! And trust me, I have done some stupid shit in the dirt with my truck

I LOVE my edge! has the 3.0 engine, 5spd trans, and is also a regular cab. Its great! mine had 82k when I got it a few months ago!
