What is the proper way to check the ATF level?

So ya...I hear a lot of ways of doing this...so i figured i would rather hear it from people that actually drive the same truck...what is the proper way to accurately check the ATF?

Engine running and warmed up from driving around. Pull dipstick out and see that the level is within the normal hot range.

make sure you wipe the dipstick and reinsert.
than pull it back out and observe the level

OK. So drive it around for a bit and let it warm up. Now. when i actually come to checking it..do i have to put the gear in drive and apply emergency brake? or just do it in park?

You check it warm and after you maually shift it at idle with foot on the brake from park -1st and back to park. That way all ther valve body passages are full of fluid.
