2000 ranger 3.0 won't start has fuel & spark

Hi, I'm new here and having problems with stepsons 2000 Ranger with the 3.0. It died when driving so he had it towed to my place. It seems to want to start but doesn't. The only error code it showed was misfire on cyl 4 so cleared codes but nothing new shows. We changed fuel filter, rigged up a fuel pressure gauge & showed upwards of about 100 psi at that schrader valve on rail. If I disconnect the air intake hose & spray starting fluid into air intake it will start & run fine until I stop spraying.
Any clues as to what else we can try as a shop is not in the budget at this time.
Thanks in advance.
Tom

100 psi for fuel pressure? thats kinda high, accdg to haynes, fuel pressure for the rangers is 56-72 psi,try reading it again,it could be youre running rich thats why its calling for more fuel, check your coils and fuel injectors see if theyre all firing, get a noid light to test the injector wiring, get a spark tester for the spark plugs,i hope somebody could chime in as well

Re: 2000 ranger 3.0 won't start has fuel & spark

I think that stepson misread the gauge. In any event, I was still doing research & found on a post # 25768 on 02/03/11 (I think) FordRanger4x4 had posted to someone else:
"Could be a bad temp. sending unit. The one the computer reads. Try unplugging the maf sensor and see if it starts."
So I tried that trick & it fired right up.
I then did a fast search & found a link to tell me to Disconnect neg battery, unplug sensor, carefully remove the MAF sensor & clean with contact cleaner spray or brake klean. Did that, let it dry, reinstalled sensor, plugged back in then reconnect battery. All is good!
Problem solved.
Just wanted to post back in case someone else has the same problem as this and found a simple fix.
