Quick Fix - Blend Door (When your A/C works and only blows out heat)

Hey guys,

Well, my 98 is getting close to going to the paint shop. I had to be certain that everything was working right before I dropped some cash on paint. However, I got one of my two issues sorted this week and thought I would share.

The problem I was having was that my air didn't work. Big problem in Nashville... My buddy and I went through everything, and I confess I even took it to a shop after we checked all of the A/C components and lines.

Turns out it was blend door slamming open to full heat whenever I was driving under load.

The issue was that A. the Blend Door actuator was removed, and B. I am assuming the arm (rod, whatever) that attaches the actuator to the blend door was broken. The previous owner, upon closer inspection behind the glove box revealed two holes cut into the duct work where someone tried to get to the actuator arm. With that and the fact that the Actuator itself was missing, I took a guess that the thing would require a complete tear down of the dash and ductwork.

So... being that it is already approaching 90 here, I took the advice of the mechanic. Drill a hold into the duct work, and pin close the blend door on cold.

So that is what I did. Now I have ice cold air that I can regulate with the blower motor settings.

If anyone is interested, I can post some pictures and details this weekend.

I tried this and got mixed results. First try, still no outside air. Second try, only heat. Third try, back to only hot air. I tried this on Dec, so I wanted the heat.

This is one of those kinda-sorta works half the time fixes.
