how to add wheel spacers

so its really basic but i got the wheel spacers in the mail today so i put them on, figured i would write up a lil how to

step one, park truck on flat surface, block the back tires and put the parking brake on

step two loosen lugs a turn or so before lifting front end. lift front end and secure with jack stands

step 3 remove lug nuts

step 4 take wheels off and slide on wheel spacer

step 6 put new bolts onto the lugs making sure the old lugs dont stick out farther than the spacer.

step 7 tighten bolts in star pattern as tight as you can, helps to have someone holding the brake to keep the hub from spinning.

step 8 put wheel back on and lug nuts on as tight as you can

step 9 lower vehicle so that wheel is just touching the ground, and finish tightening lug nuts in a star pattern again.

step 10 take it for a spin

beware guys spacers arent a good idea, i only got them because the tires rubbed on the frame. also after a few hundred miles take your tires off and check the spacer bolts, then at every tire rotation check to make sure they are tight

Well do they rub at all?

Re: how to add wheel spacers

they only rubbed flexed out and the steering wheel locked, so idk yet, but they shouldnt!

Nice job, Ben! Thanks.
I would add looking up the torque specs for your truck and the spacer too.
Use a torque wrench on the final tightening.
Lug torque should be checked again after 50? miles.

psh that stuff is for people with fancy torque wrenches, i have basic hand tools lol, i know its not the right answer but its the only one i've got. ill be down at my dads this weekend so im gonna rotate the tires and check the spacers, ill torque em at his house.

Re: how to add wheel spacers

i have an old style one with the meter on it, but they arent accurate at all, i figure if i get them as tight as i can they will be fine for now.

Re: how to add wheel spacers

Just words of caution...
Overtightened bolts/nuts/lugs can and will stretch the bolt, deform the threads and weaken the fastener.

Re: how to add wheel spacers

yeah this is true, but hand tightening with nothing but a lug wrench i should be ok.

Keep us posted on how long the wheel bearings hold up. I've always heard it puts an offset load on them.
