That Little Pinto Just Passed me !!!!

Just got my Ranger yesterday, and I was towing a little boat. So far I love my Ranger, but it's got me wondering.....
4.0L 5 Spd Standard. K&N and custom exhaust... I just cannot believe the lack of engine power when in 5th gear. Stomp on the accelerator and just about nothing special happens. For those of your with the same equipped truck as mine --> how in the heck do you pass anyone???

well i've got the 3.0 and i just downshift to pass people lol. but my 5th gear has good acceleration if im going 75 then give it about 3/4 gas it gets going pretty nice.

hmmmmm. I down-shift of course, but there still isn't any "wow" factor. The engine runs really smooth, but i think today i shall do a compression test. Truck has 88,000 kms on it.

well i know ranger arent very quick see if u can time a 0-60 full throttle and see if it matches most other my 3.SLOW does it in about 10 or 11 seconds without burning the rubber but im sure faster time if i let the tires squeal

maybe the boat was causing some heaving wind residence or something?

Double check your rear end ratio, and take into consideration the towing.
towing anyting other than a small yard trailer will act as a wind grab.
If you have 3.73's, you can go up to 4.10's but going steeper will hurt fuel economy.

Keep in mind though that if you have four wheel drive, you need to regear both the front and the back.

Also, he has an FX4L2. He should already have 4.10's.

My thoughts exactly. Rangers aren't beasts, and 5th gear is basically your overdrive. Even after a downshift, I doubt you'll see much improvement.

In regards to " what do you expect ", and " Ranger aren't beasts"....
Thanks. That was the purpose of this thread. Having owned this great little truck for 1 day, i didn't know what to expect ! I'm not complaining, however 4.0L should have some kinda SNORT.

You would think right? You know, because an underpowered V6 in a somewhat heavy compact pickup pulling a trailer with a boat on it should have so much balls to be able to just stomp on the gas and move out of it's own way. To me, that makes total sense!
