thinking of getting a 4.0 sohc
so ive been looking at rangers and i was thinking about getting one with a 4.0. i was just wondering what kind of mods you guys do to the engine. im curious is all because im currently driving a 92 bmw and the mods commonly done to it are way too expensive. most dont even add power. even cheap mods like CAI's and exhausts can easily hit 4 digits.
so what kind of stuff have you guys done to your 4.0's and how much power does it add? |
Re: thinking of getting a 4.0 sohc
a lot of guys have k&n intakes or one like it, some have bigger cams, good exhaust, and the programmers. you really dont need to make big changes to the truck unless your looking to build a hot rod and not a daily driver. in that case it would be best to drop in a 302 or 351.
what are you wanting to do? |
Re: thinking of getting a 4.0 sohc
What do you need to start hauling? You don't need to switch from a car to a truck if all you have to put in the back is sailboat fuel and motorcycle doors. If you don't have one yet, what make you think you need more power?
They drink gas. The only reason i have one is that it's the only engine that comes in a lat model 4X4 and I need one to get out in winter. I can get by on a tank of gas a month. 193 mi/13gal =14.8 X $3.28 = $48.70. If you're an average driver you'll need about 53 times that much per year. |

Tuner is by far the best/easiest mod I have as far as performance

I've had 2 Rangers, both 4.0 4x4s. I rarely tow, but I think we think alike. I'd rather pay a little more for gas and have the ABILITY to get out of the way of a crazy prius driver texting his friend about how he saved some effing owl. I also do light wheeling and can race rice-burners (and win). The fun factor I don't feel is there in the smaller motors. (my friend has the 3.0) There's no replacement, for displacement
As far as mods go, do a CAI (cold air intake), exhaust, and 4:10 gears and you'll be having fun for less than a grand. |
Re: thinking of getting a 4.0 sohc
Tuner hands down. of all the mods ive done to my truck the custom tuned X-Cal II tuner is by far the best bang for the buck and really woke my truck up and also helps a ton with the automatic trans having a good tune. if i had to do it over again i wouldnt waste my money on an intake or the headers and i would have went straight to the tuner.
