Is this possible?

I want to put a 302 into my 2002 ranger but after searching the web, the latest date i can find is 99ish? What would be the differences as far as mounting, electronics, etc? And is the fact that its a 2002 make it more difficult to swap?

2001~2003 is a little more difficult electrically but doable. Mechanically, the swap is basically the same as 98~2000.

Differences? PATS is a mismatch and you'd need to add a factory module or converter box to make the speedometer work.

99~2001 Explorer 302 is the best donor choice for your 2002.

Try to find a 5.0 Explorer, not a Mountaineer, there is some thing different in the Mercury setup, have read about the problems and solutions on other forums.
If you find an Explorer, just swap everything, I do mean everything.
One of the wrecking yard I frequent had a 5.0 Explorer that was totaled in the passenger door, the guys cut the front end off at the A pillar and removed the fenders and loaded it on a trailer for a fellow who is swapping the 5.0 into a 01 Ranger. Cost him $500, the Explorer had 23000 on it.

Found this while browsing another forum this morning, will keep looking for the problem with the Mountaineer swap, but it may have had to do with something other than the engine swap.

The Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0L AWD drivetrains are identical. To the best of my knowledge, the 2WD 5.0L combo was only available in the Explorer.

98+ Rangers should opt for the 99~2001 version of either 5.0 powertrain for better compatibility in the electrical and fuel delivery systems. 99~01 Ex 5.0L also has an improved version of the 4R70W automatic.
