1999 Ranger Clutch System Problems

We've had our Ranger for about 3 years now, it has nearly 200,000 miles on it and recently we've been having to (at least once a week) refill the clutch system with hydraulic fluid because I guess there's a leak in it somewhere. Well the other day it finally quit working alltogether. What we are wondering is whether we need to possibly just bench bleed it, to replace the master or slave cylendar, and how to know which one of these need to be done.

Thank you

Please help. I've looked at the other posts pertaining to this, but none of them see to fit into our situation. Thank you! =)

Hi,

you need to find where the the fluid is going. The hydraulics are a closed system meaning you shouldnt have to refill the reservoir. That hydraulic fluid is going somewhere and thats not good. It could be a master or slave cylinder. could be a break in a line somewhere. probably a few other things I don't know.

Anyway, if you are refilling it, the fluid goes somewhere. where is it going? Look for leaks. I'm pretty sure the slave cylinder requires dropping the trans for repair/replacement.

Sorry :(

If you can't see a leak near the master cylinder or on any of the lines, I'm betting it's the slave cylinder. Is the bottom of the transmission wet? There is a rubber seal on the driver's side you can pull to look in the bell housing. That is where the slave cylinder is behind the clutch. At 200,000 miles, your clutch probably is about due for a replacement anyway.

the slave cylinder go bad it is in side the bell housing and accuates tge clutch it is verry similar in operation to a brake caliper. any hoo the part is about 90 dollars but you have to pull the transmission to change it .a new clutch is recommended at 200000 miles they are about 300 dollars but shop around labor will kill you if you cant do your self
