Lifter Noise
I recently bought a B4000 4.0 V6 which is simply a rebadged Ranger with a Mazda Label. The engine seems a little noisy under the hood. It comes from both banks of cylinders and is sort of a tapping sound. It is not real loud but louder than any engine I have had in the past. From the cab I don't hear anything unusual and I just wondered if this is common too the Ranger 4.0 V6 engine. The engine has 85,000 miles, performs quite well although the gas mileage is not very good. Any comments would be appreciated. I am new to this forum. I am a chef and not a mechanic.

Re: Lifter Noise
its your fuel injectors I believe. Mine has the same tapping sound. Its normal

Re: Lifter Noise
well Chef Dennis, Richard may be correct, injectors do tick.. at that mileage, engine should have no noise.. after a fresh oil change if noise is still the same, it's def injectors..

Re: Lifter Noise
If its an SOHC, i made the same complaint months ago, and was explained we don't have lifters, not to worry about it.
I don't know anything about the OHV, so if that's your engine i wouldn't have the first clue. |

Re: Lifter Noise
If someone revs it up does it get louder if your standing outside?

Re: Lifter Noise
i would check the lifters rocker arms.. they might be loose, if they get loose or do not have the specific torque spec they will knock around making a ticking noise.. SOHC do not have this problem because they like you said dont have lifters. but i am curious however to why the injectors would tick like that?? can anyone explain that
