Is there any certain age or mileage they typically do or can one fail at anytime?

They fail from impact damage to the sensor, wire or the toothed pickup ring (tone ring) that rotates with the wheelbearing or from being unplugged or shorted. They don't wear out since it's magnetic pickup.
