Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
Hey fellow RangerMen,
I have a very weird question... My truck has been consuming more and more gas every time I refuel. I thought it was the new tires and rims but it was getting at least 15 mpg after i put them on. Now i'm at half a tank and only gone 80 miles!!! I used to get at least 150 from half a tank. I'm really getting frustrated as to where to start... It isn't my fuel pump just reading wrong because every time i fill up from empty i put in $45 which is like 15 or 16 gallons. So i know its burning the fuel and not reading wrong. Now it has 127k... did a complete tune up 2 years ago (plugs wires, air and fuel filter), never changed oxygen sensors though. What could be my problem? I don't have any power loss at all and thats whats boggling my mind. I went from getting 16 mpg to 6 or 7 mpg now i know thats not just from a simple tire switch Anyone have any idea of what i should do first from cheapest to.... Yes the shop! I really don't want to take it to the shop because i know they'll feed me a bunch of shit! Thanks for any and all help!!! |
Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
First get another air filter and fuel filter fill up and see how far you go. Be sure to buy a motorcraft fuel filter.

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
Alright, that sounds good, fuel filter might be clogged. I was also thinking about changing my plugs its been about 40k since the last change.

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
Before we try too hard here, how sure are you that you haven't sprung a leak somewhere? That is a LOT of fuel loss.

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
Well he would know when he went to park it for a few hours and gallons of gas be on the ground, because thats a lot of fuel.
---------- And yes change the plugs. Motorcraft plugs are 4 dollars a piece. |
Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
wow. agree with changing plugs but why not do the seafoam flush, drive a day then change plugs, oil and fuel filter. we had a toyota 4 banger that did this and it ended up being a clogged fuel rail. we really didnt notice any problems but the mpg loss was awful due to the fuel rail not functioning right...

---------- Hmm seafoam flush sounds good too, you mean half in tank half in vacuum line? Its been about 7 months since i did that, and when i replaced the fuel filter i used purolator or advance auto parts brand and not motorcraft like i should have! Thanks for all the help guys! |

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
i AM NOT AN EXPERT! but anyways i just replaced all my spark plugs for the first time and it looks like you need new spark plugs *check which ones* because they should have be longer where the spark is made
mine was short and worn out mainly because whoever had the truck before me put the wrong ones on....since replacing my spark plugs and having my valve seats redone i have more torque, almost non existant gear shift lag (it was really good before though) but i cant say much for an mpg improvement yet (just done three weeks ago) ford told me the mpg would be noticeably better but not huge all in all....check to see which plugs you are SUPPOSED TO have and see if they match and then replace them again...not an expert :( ---------- also i have no idea if it is different but if i recall correctly my spark plugs that i added had only one "arm" on the bottom of the spark plug compared to your 4 "arms" sorry i couldnt think of a better word |
Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
No wonder it isn't working right. You have the wrong spark plugs. Throw all those pieces of junk away and put in the correct Motorcraft or Autolite brand plugs. Then re-evaluate to see if the problem goes away.

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
LOL yea I let me dad take care of her while i was away... 2 years ago... He decided to put bosch +4 in it... Its ok i'm going to advance auto parts to get motorcraft platinums today! :) did seafom treatment yesterday and wow smelled like the 4th of july with all the fumes coming from my exhaust. It was a shitload! I'm gonna also buy another seafoam treat and dump it in my gas tank then filler up! Then i'm going to buy a motorcraft fuel filter to see if that helps. Thanks for the lookout!

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
Incomplete combustion causes all kinds of crap to build up. Seafoam gets rid of it. So that smell and smoke is a good sign, that means it was doing it's job. You shouldn't need a new fuel filter after two years so personally I would save your money and time on that and see if the other more obvious issues rectify the problem first. If it doesn't, then go from there.

Re: Burning too much gas and no check engine light. HELP!!
So do you think i'd need another can? Because the ford place is charging me $35 for a motorcraft fuel filter! Crazy! I can buy the new plugs and seafom for $25. So you think its better just to buy the plugs and seafoam? Thanks!!!
