I had studded snow tires on my VW bug. They do work.

I wouldn't go studs as they are a disadvantage most of the time and a great snow/ice tire works really well in all winter conditions.

I really like the Bridgestone Blizzak tires... I've got Blizzak Dmv-1's on my truck. Purchased off tire rack I paid $112 a tire in 245/75-16 but now they're on for $107 a tire

Re: snow tires

Go studded if they are legal in your state/province and if you get glare ice a lot. General Altimax Arctic have been highly rated (2nd out of about a dozen) by Consumer Reports and they provide excellent value (usually cheaper than Blizzaks and Michelin XIce XI2).

I bought some Firestone Winterforces for my Ranger. $58 a piece from Tire Rack. They are awesome in the snow, and I have a 2x4. Directional treads too!

I recommend Hankook iPike winter tires. They work wonders! I have them and love them :D

I've been thinking for a while that WinterForces are US made Blizzaks. Not sure about that but I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I have some Cooper Discovery ATR's on the rear of mine, they work well, i havent driven them in snow that much but for the but I have I've been perfectly fine, only reason I got them is because there the same ones on my dads 350, i like them pretty well.
But i know through my dads tire guy, for stock 2x4 ranger wheel size, they are 125 a piece
