Black soot and power loss

Can ANYONE help me any? I've got a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 6 cylinder that is putting out black soot, seems to lose power at high RPMs (also doesn't have the acceleration as it should), and it idles high when i first crank. What could be my problem? O2 sensor? Plugs and wires? fuel injectors? I really don't want to have to get expensive on this issue.

Any codes? My '01 is having an issue with an 02 sensor, but will have to wait til it's a tad warmer.

Yeah, the check engine light comes on every time a few seconds after I crank up. I ran the codes a month ago (there were three of them) and I can't remember exactly what the numbers were, but I do know they all said something about the EGR. ??? Also, there is a rich fuel smell while it's running. Almost like I was pumping gas at the gas station smell. I've checked my plugs and wires as well as my air filter. They're all good.

Sounds like a defective fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off of the regulator & see if you have fuel there or it looks wet, If you do then you need a new one, thats all.

A bad plug or wire would create unburned fuel too. I'm quite surprised the only codes it is triggering are EGR codes. I would read them again.
