It's telling you that a transmission trouble code is stored in the PCM - similar to a Check Engine Light. Get your codes pulled to find out what it needs.

Yep, computer noticed something up with the trans. Take it to a trans shop, as the scanners at Autozone can't read transmission codes from a Ranger. Post the code here and somebody can tell you what's going on. The scanner only says in which circuit it sensed the problem. Diagnosis will have to be made with a description of the symptoms you noticed before the light came on, and under what conditions did the light come on.

When the O/D Off light starts flashing, it's gonna flash until you shut the truck off, regardless of whether the O/D is shut off.

prob the torque converter isnt locking up all the time. meaning that you need a new torque converter. while your at it its prob a good idea to rebuld the entire transmission

WJW... the 5R55E has a few exciting things with it -- including a TSB to address a gasket / valve body / pressure issue and the EPC (for pressure control) tends to be problematic (early wear, gets dirty, etc)

Things to consider would be last-maintenance (when did you change the filter last?) as well as fluid level and condition.

Changing the filter, is a chance to inspect for debris in the pan, and introduce 4-5 quarts of clean/fresh fluid to give you a little better insight to what's up "down there"

The Exploder guys have a very good thread that can help you narrow-down your issues (and read the code, of course)... http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=140987

Why is it that people treat tranny troubles like STDs? Fawk it - Take a look and be sure of what you've got -- Fix it if you can...

Lots of the 5R55E issues can be addressed in the driveway with little more than band adjustments and minor valve-body work

Cool -- Always best to have it be someone else's problem...

vavle body gaskets was my problem mine blew and my od light flashed $553 to have them replaced one day in the shop i would have them check that befor they pull the tranny out and start looking for more diffucult problems and have them read the codes

Re: O/D Light blinking on and off

If it's slamming into gear, it may be in fail safe mode. Any time the computer senses something wrong with the trans, it'll throw the O/D Off light. When the O/D Off light comes on, the trans goes into fail safe (AKA Limp Home) mode, which is when the transmission basically switched to tactics to keep from slipping. IIRC, it's the computer puttin full fluid pressure through the trans. Any time the trans is in fail safe mode, it will produce a very hard shift at the lower gears.

Glad the dealer is willing to fix it!

Well hopefully they will...Tranny is covered under the warranty and I have only had the truck for close to a week now..so we'll see how there attitudes change depending on what they sat ..lol..

If the transmission is covered under warranty, they have no choice but to have it fixed for you. Hopefully they don't try the old change the fluid hope it's gone deal.
