Review: Ultragauge
So I ended up getting the Ultraguage. I just couldn't afford the Scangauge.
*This review is not a discussion thread of Scanguage vs. Ultragauge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So far I have logged 966 miles on the Ultragauge and I love it. My MPG's seem to be right on the money and the all the gauges seem to be reading where the should be. I had to do the distance calibration to get my speedometer correct. Distance calibration is absolutely necessary if you have larger tires or have changed gear ratios. The only issue I'm having is the fuel consumption rate and my distance till empty. Although there is a MPG calibration that can be done as well. *When I did the distance calibration I used a GPS, they recommend using a straight road with mile markers, GPS is much easier. The alarm features are great for reminding you when you need to change oil or get the truck serviced, but they can be enabled and disabled at the users discretion. Many of the gauges have an alarm associated with them. In the user manual they have a whole chart showing alarm setting and min and max values For what you pay, you get a great product. I think once my average fuel mileage is dialed in my consumption rate and DTE will be fixed. The benefits of just having the trip meters and extra gauges make this a great value The blue display works perfect for me since I have blue LED's in my gauges and buttons. The OBD II cord is long enough so I could have mounted the gauge next to my rear view, but I prefer where it's mounted now I honestly recommend the Ultragauge to anyone. I have never done mine and I cant find where it shows to do it. |

Not the best pic but this is where I keep mine. It is completely visible whether I am in P or D and is a perfect location for hiding the cable and plugging it in behind everything.

Now that I have calibrated mine correctly I can say the Ultraguage was pretty much useless/inaccurate before the calibration.
I have been wondering for a while why my mpg was so bad. Before my tires I used to get very good MPG. I actually thought the 285's would help since I have the 4.10. Over the past couple of months i just pushed the thought under the rug and blamed my MPG results on the tires. (NOT THE CASE) I had no idea how off the odometer was on my truck after the tire size increase. With this being off it would even through out bad numbers when i calculated my own MPG by hand. Now that I re calibrated the Ultraguage and calculated it by hand again I AM GETTING 19-21 MPG !!! Which i believe is a lot more accurate, I knew something wasn't right :) Just to give you an idea of how much it was off I did a longer distance test: I drove 31.1 miles according to my trucks odometer. On the same trip my GPS was reading 35.1 In the big picture that is a short trip and 4 miles off can add up over time! My speedo (on the Ultraguage) is also more accurate. Didn't realize how fast I was really going the past couple months lol. To get your money and the best experience out of the Ultraguage I highly recommend calibrating it whether you have Factory tires or +/- size tires. |

thats awesome man to hear u r gettting such high mileage!!! i wonder how off mine is and what i should get :) i still havent talked to the parents about gettin it but i will tonight :)

01RangerEdge, your 1st pic doing a calc your UG is giving an accurate DTE with the gallons remaining and present MPG.
I am enjoying the UG too. I have mine mounted on left side using the lower left corner of the front wind shield for the suction cup, and curved so it just about the dash height. I prefer not to look up, keeping the same vision scan I consider normal. I also recommend when doing the mileage calibration, the suggestion distance of 1 mile or slightly longer in the manual is way way off. First if you roll past your stop point by say 5', that error just gets compounded x100 miles or 500, 1000, 5000. Even if your error was only 1 foot that is 1/5280. However achieving a 1 foot error or less requires a clearly marked track with start and stop marks. If you were say to drive 30 miles a 5' error would only be 1/31680, a much smaller error ratio. This is very important for fuel consumption calc the UG makes. I haven't been able to complete the fuel calibration, because I fill up at Sams club which is the lowest local price, I had to do a partial fuel add due to a trip and the calibration requires a top off of the gas tank. So I need to start the process again use half a tank then top off. What is amazing is the ability in a 2wd with all city driving to improve fuel consumption about 1-1.5 mpg by monitoring the Instant MPG reading and changing driving habits, this applies for a manual tranny, I'm not sure you can do it with an A/T. |
