Front Differential Leaking

Whats up guys, I have 2005 Ford Ranger XLT, 4.0, 5-speed, 4x4 with 51xxx miles on it. I love the truck as it has been good to me (unlike my brand new fusion, tranny went at 9000 miles), anyway a while back I noticed the front differential was leaking fluid. It is right where the front drive shaft goes into the differential. My question is how much of a pain in the ass is it to change the seal, how long would it take. I know I will need the tool to take the seal out but what else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If its the seal that im thinking it is you should be able to pop the yoke off pull the seal and install the new one. Should maybe take 30-45 min?

Re: Front Differential Leaking

Thats what I was thinking. There really is nothing else that could be causing it to leak right?

Shouldnt be most of the times its the seal causing it, worst case where the seal goes in someone messed it up when putting the one in it now and gorged it out.

Pinion seals aren't too bad to change and shouldn't take too long. It might be a good time to change the fluid too so it's less of a mess.

Ya I was planning on changing out the fluid, I figured when I dropped the yoke out most of the fluid would drain anyway. What is the best fluid to replace it with. I would like to use some type of synthetic, any suggestions?

I think it uses 75W90 gear oil but check your owner's manual. Synthetic is perfectly fine. Brand is a personal preference, Mobil1, Lucas, etc.

Sorry to thread Jack but my 03 is leaking there and from the left axle. Is it just a seal there too or would I need a whole axle?

I have a 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a front differential leak. Was wondering if anyone could point me to some instructions on how to change the seal..?
