Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
I'm shopping around for some front Pads and rotors on my 01 XLT 4x4.
Can anyone recommend a decent set of brake pads and rotors, that won't go to shit fast or make nasty noises? I have gone to autoparts stores around here and half the people that work there can pretty much tell me the difference in price only. So if anyone could recommend a brake name like Bendix etc I would appreciate it. |
Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
x2 on this question. I'll be doing this soon.
(sorry Clinton, I don't have any answers) |
Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
Clinton, check your superlift knuckles for the dual caliper holes. If you've got 'em, this is an excellent opportunity to upgrade your rotor size to the later '03+ 12" rotors compared to your stock 11.2" rotors. Only early Superlifts don't have dual holes.
Rotors, I suggest a premium plain rotor that have painted non-friction surfaces. If you get just a plain jane rotor, they tend to rust hardcore on any areas that aren't friction surfaces. I run the 12" Centric Premiums from Rockauto w/ my superlift. I also run Centric Posi Quiet Ceramic pads and love 'em. Had a set of their semi-mets before and they were very good pads with very minimal dust. Ran Hawk HPS pads a few years back because everyone and their brother prised them.....worst pads I ran ever. Squeeked very fast and dust GALORE!! Drilled rotors = pointless on street truck. Slotted = have their place...I ran 'em...loved 'em. Destroyed one and upgraded rotor size. Same braking abilities. |
Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
I have no idea what the superlift knuckles look like. I only know of moose knuckles LOL. I bought the truck with the superlift on it already and I am not sure what I would be looking for or at. I would love to upgrade the rotors though, that would be kick ass man!!

Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
The knuckles I'm referring to are the steering knuckles...aka what your brakes and wheelbearings bolt to. Pop a wheel off of the truck and pop off a caliper and caliper bracket. Only way to tell if you've got dual holes on the SL knuckles on a small brake truck.
Here's a pic of what you're gonna wanna see to run the 12" rotors... those two holes side by side http://static.summitracing.com/globa...slf-9637_w.jpg |

Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
Raybestos Premium Grade pads, part number should start with PG. They are semi-metallic and available for under $40 from Rock Auto. Have used them on my Mustang as long as I've owned it (9 years) with minimal dust, no funny noises, and good long life.
With the same brand rotors, you should have all the parts you need for the front brakes for about $100 plus shipping. Discount codes are available all over the web that will net you 5% off. Before I bought my truck, the dealer installed new pads that are depositing a TON of dust, so I may be doing this sooner rather than later. |

Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
I just changed my rotors and brake pads. I used O'reilly's Best Brake rotors and ceramic pads. So far very smooth and quiet.

Re: Need a recommendation on front pads/rotors
I ran Centric rotors and Raybestos PG+ pads on my Impala…rotors were awesome. Ran them for a year with Camaro brakes with zero problems. I'll definitely get them for the truck when the time comes.
The pads however, were dust city…I'd definitely get something else. |
