noisy new drum brake shoes?
 

Hello Everyone!

The other day I replaced the rear drum shoes in m 1996 ranger, 2 wheel drive.

Is it unusual for them to be "noisy" until broken in? By noisy I mean it sounds similar to a noisy tire or a wheel bearing kind of sound. A "humming"

I don't think it can be a noisy tire or wheel bearing as this "sound" only started happening after I replaced the shoes.

I didn't have the drums turned but they did have some grooving in them.

Should I just give them a while to break in and hopefully the sound will go away?

rangers are notorious for noisy rear brake shoes if you bought organic shoes instead of semi metallic, you also should have had the drums turned, without that your shoes will wear out fast

Thanks rockwerks! I didn't even check whether the brake shoes I bought were semi metallic or not.

I'll have to take the drums off and take them somewhere and have them turned.

i used the same shoes and i did not turn my drums. everything worked fine.......when you say you had groves.....do you mean groves from the old rivets?..........did you use brake cleaner on the drums?......did you adjust the brakes so they were to tight on the drum?

The old shoes were not worn down enough to touch the rivets yet so I'm not sure how the drums got the slight grooves.

I did use brake cleaner on the drums and shoes to clean the grease off of them.

I left the adjusters somewhat loose as I didn't want the shoes out too tight.

I'm still thinking it has to be something to do with the new shoes somehow as this "humming" sound just started after I put them on.

The noise is by far worse when I first start driving the truck. After a few errands the sound is noticeably better, but still there a bit. I also think it is worse in the 40 to 45 mph zone. I'm not sure why this would be?
