How To: Reseal Ranger rear window 98-09

Well, i had the issue of my rear window leaking when it rained hard. I learned from a local body shop what to do to reseal the rear window and thought I would share. I know that this is how the rear windows on 98 up are but not sure for 93 to 97.

Materials needed,

1 roll of rear window seal

10mm wrench or socket

phillips screwdriver

rag and alcohal

First off, I removed the jack cover and popped the retaining plugs from the side panels so I could pull the panels out far enough to get to the 8 bolts (3 along the top, 3 along the bottom and 1 in the center of each end) that hold the rear window in place. You also need to remove the coat hanger (phillips screwdriver) from the rear as well so you can get behind the headliner to get to the top bolts.

The nuts that hold the rear windowin are 10mm.

Once all of the nuts are removed you can just push on the cornersand around the edges to push the rear window out.

The old seal peeled off really easy.

Make sure to clean the seal area on both the window and the truck with alcohal and that you get all of the old seal removed.

Once all of the old seal has been removed and the seal surface has been cleaned, its time to put the new seal on. It comes in a roll like shown and can be purchased from any body shop or glass installer.

To start installing the seal, start in the center of the bottom of the window as shown putting the new seal down where the old was.

Move along the seal surface area making sure to go to the outside of the bolts like shown until you get back to the starting point where you should overlap both ends about an inch or so for sealing them together.

You are now ready to set the window back into place and reassemble. Dont over tighten the nuts. I snugged them all down and then gave them all about 3 more turns each. Then reassemble your interior and your done. Took me about 45 minutes from start to finish.

I had this same problem, and the window installer wanted to put this black gooey crap in there, well when i took the window out, thats exactly what it had, i assume the previous owner did this and it was a ptta to get off and messy might i add, so i went and got the same thing as you and no more links, no mess, and definitely the correct way to do it, GRT WRITE UP BROTHER!

Is there a certain type of weather that I should do this? Like does it have to be a certain temp when applying the sealant?

the sealant isnt a glue or silicon or nething..its basically just like house weather stripping so it just peels off from the backing and your stick it on

I'm very glad to find your writeup, my 98 ranger has this problem and I didn't want to tear things up figuring out how the window comes out.

What would you call that seal roll if you wanted to order some? I can't find it online.

This is the reason I found this site because I was looking for a way to stop the leak in my 98 Ranger.

I have been reading tons of post the last few weeks because I am a Ranger fan after buying 3* and I have a few issues on my truck (143k miles)

Thanks for the write up, the only issues I had was I did not have a 10mm with me but a 3/8 worked pretty good and it took me awhile to get the sealant. The glass guy I bought it from called it Tape Kit and it only cost me $15.

If you live in the Space Coast in Florida go see the Glass Doctor because the guy was nice and gave me a few tips on doing this project.

*bought 1 truck twice

Thanks pal. I have the same problem with my 2004. It looks like the exact same way my back glass goes in. I had to have it replaced when something I was hauling crashed through it (my straps broke, if you are wondering).

A good write up for sure, and done correctly. The tape AKA: butyl tape is what the black stuff is....http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/c...ants/48463.htm Most important part is to be sure the new contact surfaces (window and metal) are spotless clean before laying in the new tape.
