Transmission Fluid?

I got an old 1989 for ranger with a 5 speed, 4 with OD. I was wondering i looked under the truck and the tranny is wet so i wanted to drain and refill the tranny with new fresh fluid.
fill it to the correct level before it messes up my tranny

I went to advance today and they didnt know what to give me, i was looking and the owners manual says SAE 80. But all the fluids i found were SAE 80-90. ? Is that okay?

Also would all the fluid be okay? It didnt say tranny fluid just gear oil. Can someone post a link from like advance, or NAPA with the correct oil for my trucks tranny thanks

Re: Transmission Fluid?

80-90 is just fine for your transmission.

They don't call it "transmission fluid" because it's gear lube.

"Transmission fluid" is used in automnatic transmissions.

BTW, I have an '89 BII that I have more than 320,000 miles on, and if you want to keep that thing around for a while, I'd spend the extra few dollars to buy a good synthetic gear lube.

It'll shift much easier in the winter, and the trans will last a lot longer between rebuilds.

Here's what I use:

Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90

Re: Transmission Fluid?

Check your owner's manual if you have one or get one online from the Ford website. Mine requires Mercon but since yours is older it might be different. If the manual says Mercon, Merc/Dex will work or you can put in Mercon V.

EDIT: My bad, the Ford site only goes back to 1996. A Haynes manual for that model year range will have the fluid specifications in it as well.

Since that's the case, the Lucas should be good.

Re: Transmission Fluid?

Deerman, I wouldn't use Lucas in my vehicle, especially in a gear box.
Go to bobistheoilguy, and take some time to familiarize yourself with the information that they have available.
I know that there are some hardcore Lucas devotee's, but I've used several of Forrest's products and haven't been happy with any of them.
I've been using AMSOIL for years, and my trans shifts better in all temps, and I use it hard.
I used to have to rebuild it about every 100,000 miles, and I've gone over that after the last rebuild, with the Amsoil, it's still strong.
Again, just my .02, but I doubt anyone else works their BII as hard as I do mine.
