Power Steering

This 99 Ranger of mine has a loud whining coming from what I think is the power steering pump. Still works properly, full of fluid just loud and obnoxious no leaks either. Any thoughts? Never been replaced over 200,000 miles

i would replace the fluid.(Mercon ATF) i use a turkey baster with a hose at the end and suck the pump dry..fill it up drive and do it a few more times.......these pumps are normally a little noisy it is part of the design, however if it is different then it has been you might want to replace. although i am a big proponent of MC parts in some applications i use aftermarket. I put the AZ pump in my truck 2 years ago and it has been fine. I think it cost $23.

What engine do you have?

On my 4.0 liter sohc, the power steering pump is at the left (driver's) side, front of the engine, with a pulley that the serpentine belt goes around, with a plastic reservoir, with a cap marked "Power Steering Fluid".

Can't speak with certainty for other engines :)

That 1 1/2 by 5 iinch container, if it's oval, may well be the master cylinder reservoir - that takes brake fluid - don't go putting anything but brake fluid in that one . . .

But I think that cap is marked "Brake Fluid Only" . . .
