Wire Identification 2002 Ford Ranger 4cyl
 

A mouse got under my hood and chewed up some wires. I can identify the spark plug wire, and some kind of vacuum line (I think), but what does the stripped wire connect to; it is bundled with the idle air control valve wire. It connects to some rubber plunger looking thing on the top of the block which I cannot identify. So I guess the real question is what is the correct name for the 'rubber plunger looking thing' because it will have to be replaced. I can't find it in my manual.

That is the cylinder head temperature sensor.

Don't forget the vacuum line, it looks like a fuel regulator line - ?

KenHIgg Thank you. I haven't figured out what that is. It is a plastic tube that connects to some round bulb at the passenger front of the compartment. It is in sections and I'm thinking I may be able to replace a section, but i can't figure out how to disconnect the section. I am afraid to just pull it, but maybe that's how it comes off. If you know about this, please advise. Thanks again KenHigg.

Sounds like a muscle line to the air circulation system. Are all the settings on the cab heating/cooling working. Like when you switch the air to the defrost does the air start coming out there, etc? Can you take a picture?

KenHigg, sorry it took so long, I'm stuck doing this on my days off. So, the AC and Heat work fine. What doesn't work is the windshield wipers, nor the wiper fluid even though the reservoir is full of fluid. I did go ahead and unplug the plastic tube from the connector and that was fine cuz it just pushes in & pulls out. That plastic tube connects at the black bulb (picture) under the air filter housing on the passenger front side, then over the coil pak (where the mouse chewed it) and then branches off (picture); one piece into the engine housing (if that's the right term), the other to the driver side wall and connects into the bottom of a round shaped object (picture). The round shaped object has 2 hoses on the other side, one which goes back and connects into the engine housing toward the front top of the engine(picture). I took pictures of the connections. Seems like it's part of an air system. The fix is easy, I just need a section of tube I think, I just don't know what to ask for at the parts store. I don't know if any of that is the windshield wiper/fluid problem. That may be another investigation :) I will have to do. Thanks for your interest and help.

Looks like an evap line. Did you say you were able to get the codes read? Any auto store should do it for free...

I thought the wipers electrical but I could be wrong. I'll check...

Everything related to that black plastic ball thing are AC and heat controls. Nothing else. It stores engine vacuum to power the vent controls.

The washer pump is electric so the only lines from that are the fluid lines to the windshield. Culprit there could be a bad pump or clogged line.
