Any Tips for Replacing Head Gasket?

Hey.

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger, and I'm soon going to be replacing the head gasket and water pump due to blown head gasket.

My plan is to disassemble to the head gasket to see where my issues are and replace/repair any faults.

I'm looking for any information that will make my life easier. What tips do you all have?

I don't have too much experience. The truck is not my daily driver. It's my project truck for learning and if I get it back running without overheating, I will be really pleased.

My honest opinion, I'd look into putting a long block in it rather than rebuild the upper half.

I would love to do that, but I really don't want to put that much money into this project.

Another thing is I want to learn as much as possible and I'm excited about taking apart the engine.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't know if you have already started, but check out this video on Youtube. This guy goes into very good detail on disassembly and has some good ideas on keeping track of bolts and lines. When I blew the head gasket on my 3.0, I watched this video and was pretty dead set on doing it myself until I realized I didn't have time to wait for a running vehicle. Plus I got a good warranty through Jasper.

Worth watching if you have a free 45 minutes.

I have not started yet. Getting everything ready before I start.

I have seen this video, It's excellent. I'm probably going to watch the whole thing a couple more times though lol.

Yeah, I'm really glad this truck is not essential to me. I can pull it apart and not really worry about it.

Thanks for the input.
