Help! Need help with front hub assemble parts

Hey i have a 1998 ranger 4x4 with rugged ridge manual locking hubs. I recently changed the hub assembly that holds the bearing. I ended up breaking a little black plastic ring maybe a retainer or spacer? i'm looking for the actual name of the part because when driving the truck the noise is very loud and doesn't sound very safe. It's my first ranger and i'm not sure what it's called. could this be why there is almost 1/4" of play back and forth of the shaft? also new to the forums so i'm not sure if the picture will upload. any info is appreciated. Thanks
