Rust Bubble On Rear Bumper

I have a rust bubble on the left rear bumper. First can it be repaired at a reasonable cost, versus a new bumper and would the repair last awhile? If you buy a black bumper, does it have to be painted to match the truck? TIA

I would think you could jut find a used one on craigslist. I see tons of them here all the time for little to nothing. I cant imagine shop being cheaper, Labor alone is usually 75 to 100 an hour. I see bumpers for under 50.

Yep it's black, might just get a new one,I'll probably paint the inside with Por15 before the install,it's a salt catcher.

Something you may want to know about......I don't know what year your Ranger is but what used to be a one piece bumper back in the 04 or 05(?) and back era got replaced with a two piece. This means that the formerly welded to the bumper reinforcement is now a bolt on item and as such, could factor in as you explore options.

Mine is a 2004,it looks like where the salt from Winter would land there from the tires and decay the metal. Here is the bumper I'm considering.Craigslist in Indiana has no decent bumpers available. All the oem bumpers I see for sale on websites are just like mine,do you have a picture of the bumper you are referring too and are they oem?

Re: Rust Bubble On Rear Bumper

I would have to crawl under mine or troll the interwebz for a pic, but here's the deal. I had the misfortune of someone backing into me, hit and run, so for $300 I wheeled it into a shop which used OEM parts. The original bumper had the reinforcement welded to the bumper; this reinforcement does among other things, provide for the ball mount on the bumper. Somewhere along the way Ford separated the two and now they are bolt together items, and for me, the shop put on all new shit including the just described reinforcement. The old one piece bumper was a DC'ed item, they had no choice. I wold like to think that if it needs another bumper, that by not having a reinforcement welded oto it, that the bumper would now be cheaper than before.

Here's a linky an ebay listing that shows the separate reinforcement, it's the large item on the top. Hope this explains it.

It would depend on how perfect you want it to look,I was looking to make mine perfect. I don't see a reason for not giving it a try. You can buy body color match paint on eBay in a spray can too. After my rear bumper got a bubble, shortly after I had it painted and replaced my front bumper had a bubble also. I'm a fanatic, so I took mine to the body shop for painting and replacement. You might get lucky and find a good chrome one in a junk yard.
