bad clutch?

I just bought a truck, a 1996, with 190,000 miles on it. I have been having issues with I think the clutch but i am not sure. When I put it into gear(it is a 5 sp. Manual tran), it sometimes grinds and it doesn't really matter what gear it is in because it does it in most gears. Can any one help me out? Is it just the clutch going out. I have read all sorts of things it could be but Is there any thing I can check to know for sure? Thanks, any advice is appreciated.

Generally speaking, the LUK company makes the clutch system components for Rangers. Google that to see if they can give you more specific information.

I would look at the slave cylinder. Does it need fluid ,bleeding, adjustment?

Re: bad clutch?

Make sure the clutch master reservoir is full of fluid, then with the engine running at idle, push the petal to the floor, put it in 1st gear. Then slowly let the clutch up till you feel the truck want to move, if the petal came up almost half way, the clutch most likely is ok. If you felt it engage really close to the floor, the clutch could be worn out, or the slave needs to be bled. Also the pilot bearing may be going bad, or you have bad syncors in the trans.
