Rear End

Hi,

I sure hope you can help me as I am definately not a mechanical type. My daughter recently bought a 2001 Ford Ranger 4 x 4 with very low mileage (under 60,000) from a family friend who pretty much kept in in a garage. After driving it a month is seemed to feel like the universal joint was becoming loose. It was also time for a transmission inspection so she took it to Cottman Transmission, where she found out that the rear end pinion gear assembly needed replacing. ( They stated that something heavy much have been towed with it) The quote is $1400.00 for the part, new bearings and seals and labor. Wow!! Of course being in a new job, her income is limited with very little savings She had them put it back together. She has found a mechanic friend who will do the work much cheaper , but....... no one will sell just the part. They want to do the work as well. Does anyone know where I can get someone to just sell the part? Also is there a way via the VIN number or some other code to determine the assembly part number. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Re: Rear End

hi james, welcome to FRF. you have a couple options here but first thing to find out is what gear ratio you have in the truck. on the door sticker there is an axle code, post that here and we can tell you what rearend gears you have. as far as parts there are several places online to buy a ring and pinion set. www.ringpinion.com www.summitracing.com and www.4wheelparts.com are just a couple off the top of my head. you will need a ring and pinion set and a rebuild kit, that will include all the bearings, seals and shims your mechanic will need to do the work such sets cost in the $300-$500 range. since you said you are not the mechanical type i dont suggest you try and replace the ring and pinion yourself, its not for beginners, setting gears requires some special measuring equipment and knowhow to get it set right, thats why it can be so expensive to have done at a shop. a much cheaper and easier option would be to locate an entire rear axle at a junkyard (being sure its a ford 8.8 and has the correct gear ratio in it) and swap the entire thing in the truck. its sounds like alot of work but its much less involved than swapping the gears. depending on mileage entire axles can range from $100-$300 give or take. if doing that yourself isnt an option i would shop around to different drivetrain shops to try and find a better price, $1400 does seem a bit high for the work they will be doing. hope that helps, good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. She lives on the other side of town and as soon as I get up with her I will post the information. I do have another question. You mentioned buying an entire rearend from a parts lot. Does it have to be a 2001 or does the rear end fit across several years? Thanks again.

I'm sure different years would fit. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html
Check out this little tidbit of information.
Hope everything works out.
