Regearing for 35s.
hey guys new to the modding of trucks, working really on my first project when i get back home. however i wanna know what i should re gear my transfer cases to or even if i need to. (im thinking i need to since im putting a much larger tire on)
I have the 4.0 ltr DOHC v6 with the 5r55e 5 speed automatic tranny BW 1354 transfer case currently with the stock 30s and 4.10 axle ratio. been trying to use the online re-gear calculators but haven't had any luck on understanding those numbers. thanks for the help! |

And yes, you will 100% want to regear if you're serious about running 35's. Those tires are no joke on these baby trucks. If you want your truck to survive them - don't cut corners or try & half-ass anything. Most guys run 4.56's or 4.88's w/ 35's. I ran 4.88's with my 4.0 when I had 35's & I liked them. |
Re: Regearing for 35s.
what he said 100% ^^

4.88s will be what you want. You can get away with 4.10s but it'll be gutless

Re: Regearing for 35s.
If you want your truck to perform close to how it performs stock, then go with 4.88 gears. And make sure you re-gear both the front and rear axles. Your transfer case says thank you.

There's a way to calculate what gears would feel like stock on your truck. For example, for me to gear correctly on 35's, I would like the torque I had on my small 225/70/15 (27.5") tires.
(New tire size / stock tire size) x original gears = new gears (35.0 / 27.5) x 4.10 = 5.21 gear ratio (closest gears available is 5.13) Or, if I want my truck to have the torque I have on 31's: (35 / 31) x 4.10 = 4.63 - so between 4.88 and 4.56. |
Re: Regearing for 35s.
alright so 4.88 seems to be the way to go. cheaper to just buy a regear kit or DIY on new diffrentials?
also im not sure which diffrential i have on my truck (if i was there id look) |
It's definitely an 8.8 especially since you're 4x4 with a 4.0
Just the ring and pinion from Yukon will work nicely. ---------- Also if you're planning to do the regear by yourself: Quote:

Re: Regearing for 35s.
ford 8.8 any other special things to buy while im getting the ring an pinion, i plan on redoing all gaskets and seals also, thanks for the link!

Yeah no problem, my advice on re-gearing is pretty dull because I haven't done one, but the advice I received from a lot of people was to just let the gear shop take care of everything if you don't have enough experience doing it.
You might save a few bucks by buying the gears yourself, but again, that's something the gear shop can provide for you. |
Re: Regearing for 35s.
I like to DIY then if i cant get it in a few days ill take it to a shop, gotta learn sum how.

Re: Regearing for 35s.
probably the stupidest question ill ever ask. regearing on the front is the same the rear correct? both are 410 so i assume they have the same setup front and back.
