2004 ford Ranger 4x4 clunk
I know that there are a few mechanical inclined people here so I am going to ask here vehicle is a 2004 manual 5speed 4x4.
When I Upshift 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear I get A clunk I am not sure if it is ujoints because it doesn't do it when I down shift. I am also wondering if the 2wheel to 4x4 switch is stuck on 4 wheel high. I am me mechanically inclined but more for older vehicles. Hell the last vehicle I owned was long ago and the last 4x4 I owned had manual shifter to switch to 4x4 which I prefer over this stupid on the dash switch. |

Check the ujoints if there ok you might have to lube the splines on the drive shaft under the rubber boot.

Re: 2004 ford Ranger 4x4 clunk
I have a automatic and lubing the splines as stated did the job...

Newer f150's have this issue. Disconnect the driveshaft from the rear diff. Use a 12 pt socket. I believe it's a 14 or 15mm. 6pt will booger it up. And get motocraft lube. It's a bright blue. Use some dykes to cut one of the metal bands holding the boot on. And lube liberally. The driveshaft should be keyed so don't force it back on. Find the spline that's fatter than the others and fit it back in with the fatter gap.
May be slightly different with rangers but it should be pretty close to the same. |

Re: 2004 ford Ranger 4x4 clunk
I have noticed that there is a little bit of play in the first drive shaft what I mean is that I can turn the drive shift clockwise approximately 1/8-1/4 of an inch I am sure that this isn't right how do I take up the slack ?

Re: 2004 ford Ranger 4x4 clunk
ooops I meant front lol actually the rear has 1/4-1/8th play but the front has around 1/2" play .
what do you mean two piece? there is one solid drive shaft for the front wheels and one for the rear wheels. another question is there after market locking hubs so I can free the front wheels or am I stuck with the stock hubs where I cannot free them . |
