Won't Start!!

I have an 89 Ford Ranger (automatic) that won't start.

I was driving home and suddenly, while going up hill, it started sputtering a little and the engine started sounding rough. It wouldn't go over 30mph. I pulled over at the top of the hill, shut off the engine, and checked for any obvious issues. After not finding any I started the truck up and let it run. Everything seemed okay so I started driving (only had a few miles to go). Made it about a quarter of a mile and it just stopped running. It made no strange noises or anything. It wouldn't start.

The gas gauge doesn't work so I thought maybe it ran out of gas. Put a little in the tank, still wouldn't start. Towed it home, and checked everything I could think of. I read a post on here that sounded similar to my problem and they said it was a fuel pump issue. I pulled the bed off and replaced that. Although I'm fairly certain the old one wasn't working correctly (if at all) that didn't fix the problem.

When I try to start the truck it tries to turn over, but won't. I killed the battery trying to start it. When we first replaced the fuel pump it almost turned over, but then nothing.

So now I'm wondering if there is some sort of computer thing that needs to be reset or something. Please, anyone with any suggestions HELP!!

Thanks.

There is a fuel inertia switch but that won't trip unless you hit something hard. It is at the front of the passenger foot compartment. Have you replaced the fuel filter? Next time you try to start it cycle the key on/off 3-4 times before cranking and see if that does anything.

It's not the inertia switch. That went out awhile ago so we bypassed it.

It could be a total stopped up fuel filter, or the timing belt could've slipped a few notches.
